The French Minister of  Foreign Affairs:
First visit to the United Republic of Tanzania.(21-22.09.2002)

Dominique de Villepin

PRESIDENT MKAPA TO RECEIVE  IN MTWARA
THE FRENCH MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dominique de Villepin, will pay a courtesy call to The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E Benjamin William Mkapa in Mtwara to take his advice as a start to his regional trip in the Great Lakes Region.

The meeting, to take place in Mtwara and schedulded on Sunday morning , September 22, 2002 is an event of prime importance for the two countries

First, because Mr. de Villepin will be visiting Tanzania for the first time since his appointment as Frances Foreign Minister in May 2002.

Secondly, this visit, the first leg of de Villepins tour of three Great Lakes countries of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda  and  the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the very first opportunity  for Him to hold direct consultations with the Tanzanian Highest Authorities on bilateral issues and a number of issues concerning the Great Lakes region, in particular the Burundi peace negotiations.(*)

Tanzanias experience as part of the regional initiative and as one of the rare East and Central African countries to enjoy peace and security, is naturally a country whose advise is of great value.

From Mtwara, the Minister will head for Bujumbura where he will meet President Buyoya and other burundian authorities.

Mr. de Villepins visit to Tanzania is in line with the commitment He personally made the day President Chirac appointed Him the 15th Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Fifth Republic since 1958 :

I will do my all my best to visit an African country once every month. Frances relations with Africa are of long standing. They bear the marks of History and that of the Heart. There is for France and Me a duty of memory, fidelity, friendship and solidarity that I intend to fullfil. France will be siding with Africans to help them in difficult times, in crisis as well as in solving their big problems. We are working together, side by side, in order to live in a more secure and stable world than before. "
